Fresh tracks have been set on all trails except Tall Pines, and all skating lanes are freshly snowcombed. Trapper Gage is at Trapper’s cabin tending the bonfire and serving hot cocoa and hot dogs! Snow is falling and skiers are happy. We’ll be grilling up a storm on the Sun Deck for Get Your Fill at the Grill today, so plan on lunch!

Fresh tracks have been set on all trails except Tall Pines, and skating lanes are combed. Snow is falling and skiers are happy. Prepping your skis with some fluoro puck wax is a good idea as the fresh snow is a little sticky. We’ll be grilling up a storm on the Sun Deck for Get Your Fill at the Grill today, so plan on lunch!

What a great day of snow yesterday! Groomer Greg groomed all day long till dark and could hardly keep up with the falling snow. Over all dense system snow accumulation was 6 to 8 inches. The results of continually packing the fresh snow yesterday are firm skating lanes and firm tracks.

All trails are freshly snowcombed and and have freshly set deep tracks.  Excellent conditions prevail!

As of 6AM we have received 6 to 8 inches of fresh beautiful snow! More is expected throughout the day.

Groomer Rodney will start packing, combing and setting track on the Mackinac Cut and Wild Turkey trails at about 7:30AM. Those trails shpuld be ready to ski on by 9:30 AM. He will then concentrate on the Rolling Hills trail and then the rest of the trails as the day progresses.

On Friday, Sept 23, the crew at Cross Country Ski Headquarters recieved the latest cross country ski information and news from the Rick Halling, Director of the Nordic program for Atomic USA.

It was especially exciting to hear about the new Skintec no-wax high performance classic ski, a very impressive innovation that Atomic has been working on since 2002. With this ski, sport skiers and racers can experience waxable ski performance in a no-wax ski, at all but the coldest temperatures.

Trails are freshly mowed and perfect for running, hiking, biking, and CAT skiing.  Stay in shape in the cool shade of the forest canopy while viewing the spectacular wildlife such as deer, pileated woodpeckers, foxes, and other native wildlife.

On June 6 Cross Country Ski Headquarters Maintenance Supervisor Jimmy Mac Frye started getting the trails ready for hiking, biking and running for this summer. So far he has raked and mowed the Rolling Hills trail. The results are impressive. A walk on the Rolling Hills trails is almost like a walk in the jungle because of the forest canopy.

Be sure to bring some mosquito repellent and if you come across a branch that has fallen on the trail please throw it off into the forest.  The best place to park is in the Ski Headquarters lot. Of course there is no fee to park or use the trails in the summer.

Trails groomed up very nicely today. There are some sunny areas that have caused some thin snow spots, but thanks to snow doctor Garrett most have been fixed. Temp at 6:30 this morning was 4 degrees.

Groomer Greg started Ginzu Grooming at 6AM this morning. He will groom again tomorrow morning.

We will continue to stay open Monday and Tuesday 10 to 5. If the snow continues to hold up after that we will stay open!

Well, we did indeed get a good amount of snow last night (6 to 8 inches) and we are forecast to get more during the day today! The snow quality is excellent dense snow.
As of 10AM this morning we are officially open! Our hope is to have the Rolling Hills trail open by 1 this afternoon.
We will be open everyday as long as the snow lasts.
Today’s lunch special is a Tuna Panini. Of course our Famous Spicy Chili will also be served.
Looks like a great weekend is on the way for X-C skiing!
We’re back!

From the Great Lakes Gazette By Kath Usitalo

It “looks like a perfect weekend” in Michigan’s cross country ski country, according the Grayling Visitors Bureau.

Escape with your Valentine to the northern Lower Peninsula, one of the best XC Ski areas in the nation. You’ll have your choice of easy-to-difficult Nordic skiing on miles of trails at seven sites near Grayling and Roscommon.

Bob and Lynne Frye’s Cross Country Ski Headquarters of Roscommon has earned its national reputation for excellence by welcoming XC skiers since 1974 to the area’s hub of Nordic skiing, with over 12 miles of trails and one of the top XC ski stores in the U.S.

XC Ski HQ also rents name brand, state of the art skis as well as snowshoes and ski walking poles at one-hour, three-hour, full day and weekend rental packages. Kids and adults can take private lessons or join a one-hour Learn to Ski Free session at 4 p.m. Saturdays.

The Stone Turtle Day Lodge has a big, inviting fireplace and a kitchen that dishes up chili, soups, and sandwiches, and special weekend meals.

You’ll find Bob and Lynne on site offering tips and advice to skiers, or behind the counter waiting on customers. If you’re at all intimidated by the sport head to XC Ski HQ to get started; their enthusiasm is contagious.

Hi Team,
Thanks to our musically talented team member Greg Merwin we now have a Team Song !!!  Download the link and enjoy, great job Greg and a big Thank-you !!!  I can see Greg now selling DVD’s out the back of his VW at the races next year !!! ( hey, wax revenue !!!! )
The Team Training at Stoney Creek was a hit, we had an even dozen Team members attend. Great to see several new faces that were also introduced to rollerskiing for the VERY FIRST time and they did fantastic, not to mention names ( Brenda, Evon and Dan ) !!!  Three different brands of rollerski’s were on hand to demo, which was very beneficial. So much that two are in the process of purchasing a pair to help get a jump start on next ski season.
We started of with some basic dryland skate movements on land and then moved to our rollerski’s with double pole, skate w/o poles and finer points of V1. The first timers looked liked veterans in a short time. We then did an easy instructional loop around the lake. The weather amazingly was in our favor with all the rain predicted.
Off to Devans house for pizza, which by the way was some of the best pizza around !!!  Evidently I left quite an impression on Sam on the amount of slices I had consumed, I still think Larry K. had me by one piece ( evidently Larry thinks EVERYTHING is a race ) !!!  Linda also made a fantastic salad to go with the pizza, Thanks again Linda !!!
After gorging ourselves Devan entertained us with the 2010 Birkebeiner video. In which we saw a short glimpse of our very own XCHQ Teammate Larry Timm in the 50K Classic Race, pretty cool !!!  Hard to miss our uniform in photo shots. Has anyone ever spotted our uniform in the Birkie advertisements in all the ski magazines, it’s happened believe it or not, twice. Mike Seaman can be seen wearing our Team Jersey from one of the ad’s a few years back and they caught my left arm, pole and drink belt from the 2009 race ( I guess they didn’t like how the rest of my body looked after 50K ) !!!  A well done video of the race, worthwhile purchasing, great for viewing technique of the elite skiers. Thanks Linda and Devan for being such gracious hosts !!!
Hope to see you at our next session, now is the time if you ever had questions about ski training, rollerskiing etc. We welcome all abilities and take the time to work with you and answer your questions. So when the time comes for serious training you will be ready to go. Devan will be sending out an e-mail for our next training session, so stay tuned and hope to see some more new faces !!!
Have a great Summer and train smart, Frank

Congratulations to the Cross Country Ski Headquarters Team for winning the 2010 Michigan Cup, the forth time in a row, and the fifth time since 2004! As the sun came out or the clouds, Team Captain Frank Rynalski accepted the Cup at Saturday’s Michigan Cup bike, run, lunch and awards ceremony at the Cross Country Ski Headquarters in Higgins Lake.

Skiers from the Michigan Cup teams gained points, based on their overall place, at every event raced during the season. Each skier’s points were added together for an individual’s total team points. The points from all senior skiers were added together for a senior point total, and all the junior points were added for a junior total. The overall Michigan Cup team totals were computed by adding 80% of the senior points with 20% of the junior points.

The results were very close, with the Headquarters just barely edging out Hanson Hills/Cross Country Ski Shop by less than 500 points, 29,871.6 to 29,381.8. The Vasa Ski Club was not far behind with 28,357.2 points, and might have won if they had sent racers to the Team Time Trial.
